The Marshall Islands had two swimmers representing them at Rio 2016, Colleen Furgeson and Giordan Harris. They gave us some of their time to tell us all about swimming on the islands and how they got involved in the sport. The Reporters' Academy were commissioned by a number of Oceania Olympic teams to provide press and media production support throughout the Games. We wrote, filmed, reported and collated all their news to shared on the teams' media platforms and also to allow our friends in the international media to tell their stories. This film was made by young people of The Reporters’ Academy, a media production company run by young people. Tasked with the mission of reporting behind the scenes of the Rio 2016 Olympics.

As the weeks turn days in the countdown to the London 2012 Olympics, athletes from Oceania are travelling to the north west of England to begin their pre games training camps. The Marshall Islands have 4 athletes competing in 2 events this summer, with only one of them athletes having past experience of an Olympic Games. Olympic new comers Ann-Marie Hepler and Giordan Harris, will both be competing in the 50m freestyle swimming events, and they have now both arrived in Liverpool to begin their pre games training camps. When I met the two athletes I asked them how it felt to be an inspiration to the rest of the islanders back on The Marshall Islands, Ann Marie said, "It feels good, but I'm nervous, and excited at the same time". Giordan agreed with Ann-Marie, but added he was "overwhelmed" by it all. When asked about what swimming is like back on the islands, Giordan said, "there is not that many Marshallese kids that do swim, and we just want more kids to start swimming, which they have been doing, we started of with very few, but now we have an actual swimming team". Ann-Marie was thinking of the bigger picture, and one day bringing more athletes to represent The Marshall Islands at the Olympic Games, she said "I want more athletes to come (to the Olympics), we only have 4 this year, but I want more to participate in the future". Both Ann-Marie and Giordan seem keen on inspiring people back on the Islands to get involved with sport, especially swimming, and one day let someone else be in their shoes, and inspire a nation. -----Ends------- This story was produced by Lewis of The Reporters' Academy, a media production company run by young people, tasked with the mission of telling Oceania London 2012 stories . More information about the video content bellow: 1. There is an island in Marshall Islands called the “Bikini Island”. It is used as a nuclear testing site for a United States Program called Operation Crossroads. One popular fan theory suggests that this is the place where Bikini Bottom lies and Spongebob Squarepants and his friends are the result of nuclear radiation. 2. The Marshall Islands provides the world’s largest sanctuary for sharks, which virtually doubled the protected area for sharks worldwide. 3. Elugelab, a Marshallese island, no longer exists – it was blown up by the US Armed Forces in 1952 during a hydrogen bomb test. 4. Majuro is the capital and largest city of the Republic of the Marshall Islands. It’s made up from three main islands called DUD or Dulap-Uliga-Djarrit. During WW2, United States troops invaded, but found that Japanese forces had evacuated their fortifications. A single Japanese warrant officer had been left as a caretaker. With his capture, the islands were secured. WW2 the lagoon became a large forward naval base of operations and was the largest and most active port in the world until the war moved westward when it was supplanted by Ulithi. 5. Before the missionaries came, all Marshallese people were tattooed. The ceremony was extending over a month, most painful and held to confer beauty and bring honor; it was a rite of passage to man or womanhood and was believed the only attribute to be carried beyond the grave; partaking of religion, it served as well to confirm ties of family and birth. Facial tattooing, intended to conceal the wrinkles of age, was reserved for chiefs – to whom was permitted the richest and most widespread adornment. 6. The people follow what the Bible stipulates concerning marriage: the man is the one that moves to be with the woman. But this is mainly because the culture is matrilineal. Therefore, land is passed down from generation to generation through the mother. 7. The Marshall Islands consists of 1,156 individual islands and islets, but only 29 are inhabited.
