In the Pacific at the heart of our water world in seemingly untouched paradise sits a lethal ticking time bomb. It is the exact point where our Nuclear Legacy and the threat of Climate Change meet. RUNIT DOME is located in the Marshall Islands -- where the U.S. conducted 67 atmospheric nuclear weapons tests from 1946 -1958 -- “for the good of mankind and to end all world wars” In 1947, the People of Enewetak were relocated because of the weapons testing to Ujelang Atoll. For 28 years they suffered starvation, famine, and epidemics. In 1975, they boarded government ships in protest demanding to be returned to their ancestral home. Due to international pressure, the U.S. agreed to “remediate” the islands of Enewetak Atoll that were heavily contaminated by radioactive fallout from the 43 atmospheric nuclear weapons tests that took place here. From 1977-1980, 4,300 U.S. military personnel removed 12” - 18” of radiated topsoil off these islands and transported this to Runit Island; the scene of 17 atomic weapons tests. This highly contaminated material was mixed with Portland cement, then pumped into a 360’ x 37.5’ crater created by the Cactus nuclear weapons test, detonated May 5, 1958. A space created in the center is where Plutonium, the most deadly substance that exists, was deposited. A concrete dome also a mixture of contaminated material was placed over as a cap. Today, less than 300 of these men can be accounted for. In 1980, the People of Enewetak were informed that it would be dangerous to return to their island. After 33 years in exile, they chose to come home. Today, nearly all of their food is imported because very little will grow on their island and much of the seafood in the lagoon is still contaminated. RUNIT DOME contains over 11,000 cubic yards of radiated material and up to 400 lbs of Plutonium. It is at and below sea level -- is unlined and has been leaking since day 1. Plume of Runit radiation has been detected off the coast of China. Runit Island is uninhabitable for 120,000 years. If RUNIT DOME is swallowed up by rising sea level due to Climate Change this will unleash an unprecedented global environmental catastrophe… - but the Marshall Islanders are fighting. This setting will make for a powerful VR experience revealing our future if we don’t STOP CLIMATE CHANGE.

More information about the video content bellow: 1. There is an island in Marshall Islands called the “Bikini Island”. It is used as a nuclear testing site for a United States Program called Operation Crossroads. One popular fan theory suggests that this is the place where Bikini Bottom lies and Spongebob Squarepants and his friends are the result of nuclear radiation. 2. The Marshall Islands provides the world’s largest sanctuary for sharks, which virtually doubled the protected area for sharks worldwide. 3. Elugelab, a Marshallese island, no longer exists – it was blown up by the US Armed Forces in 1952 during a hydrogen bomb test. 4. Majuro is the capital and largest city of the Republic of the Marshall Islands. It’s made up from three main islands called DUD or Dulap-Uliga-Djarrit. During WW2, United States troops invaded, but found that Japanese forces had evacuated their fortifications. A single Japanese warrant officer had been left as a caretaker. With his capture, the islands were secured. WW2 the lagoon became a large forward naval base of operations and was the largest and most active port in the world until the war moved westward when it was supplanted by Ulithi. 5. Before the missionaries came, all Marshallese people were tattooed. The ceremony was extending over a month, most painful and held to confer beauty and bring honor; it was a rite of passage to man or womanhood and was believed the only attribute to be carried beyond the grave; partaking of religion, it served as well to confirm ties of family and birth. Facial tattooing, intended to conceal the wrinkles of age, was reserved for chiefs – to whom was permitted the richest and most widespread adornment. 6. The people follow what the Bible stipulates concerning marriage: the man is the one that moves to be with the woman. But this is mainly because the culture is matrilineal. Therefore, land is passed down from generation to generation through the mother. 7. The Marshall Islands consists of 1,156 individual islands and islets, but only 29 are inhabited. President Tsai Ing-wen arrived in the Marshall Islands today, the first stop on her tour of three Pacific allies. She was welcomed by the President of the Marshall Islands, Hilda Heine. Both Tsai and Heine have doctorates and are the first female presidents in their countries.Shortly after Tsai landed, they headed to the Marshall Islands International Convention Center where they witnessed the signing of two memorandums of understanding, one to establish a scholarship program fund for Marshall Islands students, and the other to cooperate on immigration affairs and eradicating human trafficking.

Today is also Gender Day here at the U.N. Climate Change Conference. We are joined by the first woman president of the Marshall Islands, Hilda Heine, and her daughter, poet and climate change activist Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner.
