"At a climate change conference, a colleague tells me 2 degrees is just a benchmark for climate negotiations. I tell him 2 degrees is a gamble," says Jetnil-Kijiner. More information about the video content bellow: 1. There is an island in Marshall Islands called the “Bikini Island”. It is used as a nuclear testing site for a United States Program called Operation Crossroads. One popular fan theory suggests that this is the place where Bikini Bottom lies and Spongebob Squarepants and his friends are the result of nuclear radiation. 2. The Marshall Islands provides the world’s largest sanctuary for sharks, which virtually doubled the protected area for sharks worldwide. 3. Elugelab, a Marshallese island, no longer exists – it was blown up by the US Armed Forces in 1952 during a hydrogen bomb test. 4. Majuro is the capital and largest city of the Republic of the Marshall Islands. It’s made up from three main islands called DUD or Dulap-Uliga-Djarrit. During WW2, United States troops invaded, but found that Japanese forces had evacuated their fortifications. A single Japanese warrant officer had been left as a caretaker. With his capture, the islands were secured. WW2 the lagoon became a large forward naval base of operations and was the largest and most active port in the world until the war moved westward when it was supplanted by Ulithi. 5. Before the missionaries came, all Marshallese people were tattooed. The ceremony was extending over a month, most painful and held to confer beauty and bring honor; it was a rite of passage to man or womanhood and was believed the only attribute to be carried beyond the grave; partaking of religion, it served as well to confirm ties of family and birth. Facial tattooing, intended to conceal the wrinkles of age, was reserved for chiefs – to whom was permitted the richest and most widespread adornment. 6. The people follow what the Bible stipulates concerning marriage: the man is the one that moves to be with the woman. But this is mainly because the culture is matrilineal. Therefore, land is passed down from generation to generation through the mother. 7. The Marshall Islands consists of 1,156 individual islands and islets, but only 29 are inhabited. 19-year-old Giordan Harris made his Olympic debut on the 2nd August 2012 when he took to the pool in London. With worries of not being able to compete due to an operation just two and a half weeks before his race, Giordan set himself a new personal best and looks forward to lowering that mark in the near future. This video was produced by Lewis Woods of The Reporters' Academy, a media production company run by young people, tasked with the mission of telling the stories of Oceania's London 2012 journey. The Reporters' Academy is integrated into the world of media, education and employment, based in two great sporting cities, Manchester and Melbourne, and is officially inspired by London 2012

Strive to Thrive. Every year the citizens of the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) in Hawaii celebrate their Marshallese Education Day (MED) to promote educational achievements of RMI students in Hawaii. This year the MED event will be held at the Harris United Methodist Church on Vineyard Boulevard on April 21st. Education is a major reason for the new migrant populations from the COFA nations to travel and establish themselves in the United States. In Hawaii, many students from the Republic of the Marshall Islands are attending schools throughout this state’s public school system. The local Marshallese communities come together every year to celebrate and promote educational achievement among their students. Cultural practice and traditional knowledge are also a major part of the celebrations. In this episode of Pacific Partnerships in Education, Ms. Ariana Tibon joins Ethan Allen to talk about this years Marshallese Education Day celebrations. The host for this episode was Ethan Allen. The guest for this episode was Ariana Tibon. ThinkTech Hawaii streams live on the Internet from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm every weekday afternoon, Hawaii Time, then streaming earlier shows through the night. Check us out any time for great content and great community. Our vision is to be a leader in shaping a more vital and thriving Hawaii as the foundation for future generations. Our mission is to be the leading digital media platform raising public awareness and promoting civic engagement in Hawaii.

On Tuesday, Iran seized a Marshall Islands cargo ship called the Maersk Tigris, heading through the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Due to a treaty, the US has full legal responsibility for the defence of the Islands. In other words, it's like Iran attacking an American ship. Marissa Semkiw of TheRebel.media talked to Tom Rogan, a foreign affairs columnist with the National Review who actually predicted this would happen. http://democracynow.org - Among the poets from around the world who came to the U.N. climate summit in Morocco to highlight the impacts of climate change and inspire climate action was Marshall Islands poet and climate activist Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner. She reads her poem, "Two Degrees." Climatologists say that the best-case scenario of immediate and dramatic curbs on carbon emissions is that planetary surface temperatures will increase by at least 2 degrees Celsius in the coming decades. "At a climate change conference, a colleague tells me 2 degrees is just a benchmark for climate negotiations. I tell him 2 degrees is a gamble," says Jetnil-Kijiner. "At 2 degrees, my islands, the Marshall Islands, is already under water. This is why our leaders push for 1.5."
