  • Marshall Islands Poet to U.N. Climate Summit: At 2 Degrees, My Islands Will Already Be Under Water

http://democracynow.org - Among the poets from around the world who came to the U.N. climate summit in Morocco to highlight the impacts of climate change and inspire climate action was Marshall Islands poet and climate activist Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner. She reads her poem, "Two Degrees." Climatologists say that the best-case scenario of immediate and dramatic curbs on carbon emissions is that planetary surface temperatures will increase by at least 2 degrees Celsius in the coming decades. "At a climate change conference, a colleague tells me 2 degrees is just a benchmark for climate negotiations. I tell him 2 degrees is a gamble," says Jetnil-Kijiner. "At 2 degrees, my islands, the Marshall Islands, is already under water. This is why our leaders push for 1.5." Democracy Now! is an independe...

Dr. John D. He notes that other geologic and ocean factors affect the rise or fall of land. These are unrelated to human effects on climate. He points out that Prince Edward Island may be affected by sea level rise at some point, though much of the land in the region is still rising due to post-glacial rebound from the melting of massive glacial ice, thousands of years ago.

More information about the video content bellow: 1. There is an island in Marshall Islands called the “Bikini Island”. It is used as a nuclear testing site for a United States Program called Operation Crossroads. One popular fan theory suggests that this is the place where Bikini Bottom lies and Spongebob Squarepants and his friends are the result of nuclear radiation. 2. The Marshall Islands provides the world’s largest sanctuary for sharks, which virtually doubled the protected area for sharks worldwide. 3. Elugelab, a Marshallese island, no longer exists – it was blown up by the US Armed Forces in 1952 during a hydrogen bomb test. 4. Majuro is the capital and largest city of the Republic of the Marshall Islands. It’s made up from three main islands called DUD or Dulap-Uliga-Djarrit. During WW2, United States troops invaded, but found that Japanese forces had evacuated their fortifications. A single Japanese warrant officer had been left as a caretaker. With his capture, the islands were secured. WW2 the lagoon became a large forward naval base of operations and was the largest and most active port in the world until the war moved westward when it was supplanted by Ulithi. 5. Before the missionaries came, all Marshallese people were tattooed. The ceremony was extending over a month, most painful and held to confer beauty and bring honor; it was a rite of passage to man or womanhood and was believed the only attribute to be carried beyond the grave; partaking of religion, it served as well to confirm ties of family and birth. Facial tattooing, intended to conceal the wrinkles of age, was reserved for chiefs – to whom was permitted the richest and most widespread adornment. 6. The people follow what the Bible stipulates concerning marriage: the man is the one that moves to be with the woman. But this is mainly because the culture is matrilineal. Therefore, land is passed down from generation to generation through the mother. 7. The Marshall Islands consists of 1,156 individual islands and islets, but only 29 are inhabited. In the northern Pacific Ocean, the Marshall Islands are made up of 29 low lying coral atolls. It looks like the perfect island paradise, but the country is one of the most vulnerable in the world to the impacts of climate change. There are no mountains on the atolls that sit just 6 feet below sea level. The highest tides known as king tides, recurring tides and the swelling of the ocean, make the islands highly vulnerable to erosion. The king tides have a predictable cycle that follows the moon with the highest tide occurring approximately every 14 days in the lunar month - when the moon is closest to the earth. In Demon Town, Majuro locals watch as the waves swallow the seawalls just recently built by the community. An exceptionally low tide will bring the shoreline back about 200 metres (656 feet) exposing the rocks and corals. 23-year-old William Kaisha Jr. recalls the last time extreme high tides known as king tides hit the island and says he worries that climate change is eating away his home. "The sea level came up and came over the sea wall right over there, and there was flood over the seawall," he says. Locals say that erosion is a gradual process in recent decades the coastline has lost between 100-200 metres. Kaisha points out bones that he and other locals found embedded in the sand. He says he knows they are human bones, because they were wrapped in the same white cloth the islanders use to bury their dead. There are no scientific reports that solely blame climate change on global pollution, but the Marshall Islands government says a warmer world causing heavier rain and prolonged drought is threatening the very existence of the country. Tony De Brum is Minister-in-Assistance to the President of the Republic of the Marshall Islands and is responsible for climate change and energy. He has been vocal in climate change meetings globally, warning that the effects of climate change to the Marshall Islands is an issue of security affecting survival of his country. "If the world continues the way it is, continue the behaviour that they have become accustomed to and continues to pollute, we are not talking about a situation that is going to happen a 100 years from now. We are talking about something that is happening now," he says. On route to Laura, a beach park located at the furthest end of Majuro, the road has been completely flooded by water coming over the sea wall. De Brum says he remembers having birthday parties on the beach as a child. "There used to be park benches under here where people would picnic and now they are pushing people back." He says back then the shoreline was at least a 100 metres (328 feet) from where he now stands, but in just two decades it has disappeared. With 4 great-grandsons and 9 grandchildren, De Brum says he is concerned for the future of the younger generations on the islands. His family have already lost a whole uninhabited island that now under water exposing just a few bare rocks. The privately owned island was reclaimed by the sea in less than a generation De Brum says that the erosion of the Marshall Islands is on fast track and the country is extremely vulnerable in terms of both physical and economic survival. The country is totally reliant on fishing and tourism for income and does not have any of the tools and financing required to develop a form of resilience to threats of tides, flooding and droughts. He says the international community must listen and take action against climate change - not just for the Marshall Islands, but for the whole world. For the Marshall Islanders it means sea walls are being constantly 'built' in anticipation of the next king tide.
